Washington D.C. Art Leadership Program

For a few days, Oogie students traveled to Washington D.C. to participate in our Art Leadership Program, which is part of the International Child Art Foundation, an enrichment program that provides workshops and art lessons for students all over the world. Oogie students met with several mentors and connected with local students to bring about different art programs. Director Choi emphasizes the importance of being a leader and not a follower, and this was a rare and uplifting opportunity for students to share their knowledge and creativity with their peers and children.

New York Times Article: Laura Anderson Barbata's "Stories and Stilts"

Oogie Art was mentioned in the New York Times article featuring the performance artist Laura Anderson Barbata’s program “Stories and Stilts” at the BRIC House through August 31st. The event featured is part of the Oogie Art Internship experience. During the program, students lead families through the “Transcommunality” show and presented a Korean folk tale titled “The Pious Daughter” Lots of preparation went into this and it was a great opportunity for students to experience installation and performance art firsthand. We are so proud of all the Oogie Art Students that participated!  

Designer's Talk: Marco Lafiandra

Marco LaFiandra is a Designer and project manager at DDC Designpost. He moved to New York City 6 years ago from Italy and studied Industrial Design in college. Marco gave a presentation about the design process and experience of being a designer from both Italy and NY. His advice for students was to never abandon their personal vision and mission, and to always connect with clients on a deeper level.

Artist's Talk: Maren Hassinger

Maren Hassinger is the Chairwoman of the Sculpture department at the Maryland Institute College of Art. She’s known for her public art using industrial and natural materials. She also works in performance and video. Oogie students participated in a group sculptural installation and had a group discussion.

Visiting Artist: Lee Boroson Professor at RISD

Senior Critic of the Sculpture Department at the Rhode Island School of Design, Lee Boroson makes a visit to Oogie Art to view several Oogie student’s artworks and give them advice on how to improve their work, especially for their portfolio. Boron is best known for his room-filling inflated sculpture, inspired by many sources including historic garden design to the Architecture of over-looked sections in buildings.

Designer's Talk Event at Oogie Art

Art & Technology - in Palo Alto, San Jose, San Francisco

This past summer of 2013, Oogie Art students took a major trip to visit various companies in Silicon Valley. This was by far one of the most rewarding experience for our students as they were given advice and stories from industry professionals directly. Students saw first-hand how art and technology were creating new, in-demand career paths for art college graduates giving them lots of practical insight into how they could better prepare their paths as artists & designers. Some of the design and tech-startups visited were Elemental 8, a product design agency, Liquid Agency, a branding and marketing firm, and Wagic, a toy design company. From listening to the advice & stories from passionate people in the industries, it gave students inspiration to pursue their dreams.

Artist Studio Visit: Summer Wheat, New York

Oogie students visited the studio of Summer Wheat, a visual artist working in Brooklyn. Her work is a combination of sculptural installation, drawing, and most notably painting. She looks for innovative ways to apply the paint to canvas, and has used objects like syringes, mops, and brooms to apply the paint. Her work is sometimes grotesque and messy, and sometimes alludes to a social critique of the wealthy and destitute classes. After visiting, students were inspired by the layering of paint and different ways to apply paint to surfaces.

Change by Design: Group Show for Business and Design Course

Oogie students took a course on product design, and learned all about 3D printing. Some products they were asked to design were a lamp, bookends, iPhone case, lighting, lens cover, cups. Students had an exhibition of their products and designs at the end of the course.

Artist Studio Visit: Kunié Sugiura

Kunié Sugiura is a Japanese based photographer working in New York City. Her medium of choice is the photogram, which is is a photographic image made without a camera by placing objects directly onto the surface of a light-sensitive material such as photographic paper and then exposing it to light. During their visit, students were able to create sample photograms giving them further inspiration and ideas for future projects. 

Art & Design in London: Summer Abroad Program

Oogie students took an extensive trip to visit the famous works of art located at the Tate and the National Gallery in London. Amongst the famous works were Monet's Water Lilies, Georges Seurat, William Turner, and an introduction to Britain's famous artist David Hockney.

Architecture & Art in Spain and Venice

Oogie students took a trip to Spain and Venice this August to view the famous artwork and architecture in each country. Students started out in Barcelona and Madrid, visiting the Sagrada Familia and Architecture by Gaudi, along with the Prado museum and seeing famous works of art by Velazquez, Goya, Picasso, etc. heading to Venice to learn about the Renaissance and Mannerism.

Summer Abroad Program: Impressionism & Artist in France

Oogie students had an amazing time in Paris, France viewing world famous artwork and architecture. Students started out at the Louvre and saw artwork by famous artists like Da Vinci, Courbet, Monet, Edgar Degas, Van Gogh, etc. as well as viewing Baroque and Classicism examples. They also visited the Palace of Versailles which is now a national landmark.
